Established over 90 years ago, Walkers Greengrocers was founded by Great Grandad Harold Walker.
Walkers started trading at 1, Ricardo Street, Hanley in the early 1920’s serving quality groceries to families in the local area. In 1938 the business moved premises to a new building in Hulton Street, Hanley; this is where Harold (Arthur’s Dad) traded during the Second World War, and was where he remained until 1960.
Hackwoods fruit and vegetable stall, the parents of Nancy Walker opened for business during the mid 1940’s. The stall in Hanley market sold local produce brought in by local farmers on horse and cart; growers included Norbury and Hammersley and D. Evans, whose Grandson still serves us today.
At Walkers we love to try new recipes and we love to share them with our customers!
In every bag you’ll find a seasonal recipe that incorporates items from your delivery. We are all culprits of getting into set routines with our meals; by providing weekly recipes we hope families will become more adventurous with their cooking and try new things.
As a society our eating habits are deteriorating rapidly and here at Walkers we aim to change this… Families view fresh fruit and vegetables as a privilege, when in fact it is often the cheapest thing on the plate and see cooking as a time consuming chore, when in fact a deliciously healthy meal for the whole family can be knocked together within 20-30 minutes; even more so now with Jamie Oliver’s innovative 15 and 30 minute recipes! As a passionate topic of the family, our Fruit and Veg Bag home delivery service aims to educate society and promote healthy eating within Staffordshire.
Feedback from customers has been fantastic and proves that are aims are being achieved: “We’re eating so much more healthier and feel so much better for it” and “The weekly recipes are great, were trying vegetables that we never would have before”.
So lets go back to basics and get Staffordshire cooking and eating healthy, with fresh fruit and vegetables are at the very heart of every dish!
