Meet Our Family
Established over 90 years ago, Walkers Greengrocers was founded by Great Grandad Harold Walker.
Walkers started trading at 1, Ricardo Street, Hanley in the early 1920’s serving quality groceries to families in the local area. In 1938 the business moved premises to a new building in Hulton Street, Hanley; this is where Harold (Arthur’s Dad) traded during the Second World War, and was where he remained until 1960.
Hackwoods fruit and vegetable stall, the parents of Nancy Walker opened for business during the mid 1940’s. The stall in Hanley market sold local produce brought in by local farmers on horse and cart; growers included Norbury and Hammersley and D. Evans, whose Grandson still serves us today.
Mr and Mrs Walker (Arthur and Nancy) then took over the stall in 1965, trading as Hackwoods until the early 1980’s, at which point they moved back to Hulton Street, Hanley to open one of the first self-service fruit and vegetable shops in the area. Established in 1982, the shop has been a great success selling quality produce grown by local farmers.
Martin, the son of Arthur Walker has been involved in the family business since a young age; officially taking over from his father in the late 1990’s. Ambitious to take the family business forward the shop was transformed into a Farm Shop, now stocking a diverse range of products from condiments and jams to meats and dairy; sourced directly from suppliers within our local area.
Recognising customer preference changing towards the convenience of a one-stop shop, we took on a new challenge. In 2010 Lauren, daughter to Martin Walker introduced our fruit and veg home delivery service, delivering fresh, flavoursome, local produce direct to your door. The service provides a pleasing alternative to the supermarkets; having always remained passionately devoted to our customers, local suppliers and farmers.
Today, the home delivery service continues to grow; with five different delivery days, delivering all across Stoke-on-Trent. This modern approach to buying fruit and vegetables has really taken off; customers regularly comment on how much more flavour the produce has and how much longer it lasts compared to the supermarkets.
Having served the local community for four generations, you can rest in the knowledge that we only supply quality produce at competitive prices.
